  • Dysautonomia is a term used to describe multiple medical conditions that cause the malfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System. The Autonomic Nervous System is what controls the “automatic” functions of our bodies, the ones that we don’t think about, such as, heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, dilation and constriction of the pupils of the…[Read more]

  • Having arthritis in my hands I have found gloves are an absolute must. Spring, Summer, Fall & winter, you can find me wearing gloves.
At my local CVS, I found white cotton gloves. The box calls them, Dermatological Cotton gloves and you get 2 pair in the box for around $5 dollars. They are great for helping to keep the medication on my hands.…[Read more]

  • FredFriend,

Our deepest sympathy for the loss of your friend. I love the sign tool idea. I cared for my in-laws for many years. My mother-in-law had diabetes. We came up with a word that she could say when she was having issues with low blood sugar. She didn’t have to worry about trying to explain what was happening, all she had to do was say…[Read more]

  • Bd,

We are happy to have you back. The journey of pain is one that is unpredictable. Sometimes before we even realize what is happening, it sneaks up on us to make sure we are still paying attention to it.

We look forward to reading more here about the Lonoh and Ms. Kitty and on the other forum, Mumblings of a Hermit.

  • When I was unable to walk on land I discovered that I could walk in the pool. In the summer it is easy to pop next door to my neighbors’ house and spend 30 minutes walking around their pool. Just making laps around the perimeter with the varying depths. Very soothing as well as being exercise. Still haven’t found an affordable indoor pool for…[Read more]

  • Keep moving forward! That is my mantra. One step in front of the other since walking is the most accessible exercise. Wearing a pedometer full time makes it possible track those steps between the bedroom and the kitchen or bathroom as well as the ‘exercise’ or ‘workout’ steps. One of my biggest excuses used to be that the actual movement of…[Read more]

  • December and January is that time of year when people of many different faiths celebrate. So many opportunities to join groups in houses of worship. I just want to say that it is okay to go and okay to skip. Just make sure your physical comfort/support is addressed to keep your pain managed while pursuing your spiritual needs of community and…[Read more]

  • Here is a link to the Defense & Veterans Center for Integrative Pain Management. It is an excellent model that isn’t widely available in the civilian healthcare systems. Maybe this will be so successful that civilian systems will be clamoring to offer Integrative care as a matter of course.

  • A couple of months ago I had the honor of being the bedside advocate for a friend with MS. While she was in the hospital for 4 weeks I joined family members and other friends in rotating shifts to make sure that she had her communication tools available because she had long since lost the ability to vocalize. She used eye movements to look at…[Read more]

  • BD and Noki,
I am so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a close friend/family member. I was really touched by your words, BD, “She won her fight. She no longer hurts. She is free. She isn’t gone. She’d here in my heart, here on my shoulder,”

    What a great tribute.

  • FredFriend replied to the topic Food Triggers in the forum Migraines/Headaches 9 years ago

Artificial food coloring is a trigger that I’ve been pretty good at avoiding. Artificial sweeteners is another trigger that many people overlook. No matter which artificial sweetener it is, I feel like I’ve been smacked in the head within 15 minutes of ingesting it. Then the nausea comes on and I find myself with an overwhelming headache…[Read more]

  • Noki4,
Glove liners are just lighter gloves that you would put on underneath other gloves. When I lived in an area that had snowy winters I saw all kinds of ‘glove liners’ available at all kinds of stores. So now when I’m at CVS or Walgreen’s and see the big bucket of lightweight knitted gloves or $3 or 5 for $10 I am reminded that these are a…[Read more]

  • Dear gosiatracz6,

Your willingness to share and reach out shows to me that you are a great caregiver. Each of us who lives with pain has to acknowledge and understand the uniqueness of our own pain. We also have to take into account how our own pain affects the people around us. My experience since my teen years is that my pain will never fully…[Read more]

  • Welcome Shadowbox!
You are so right about how we delude ourselves into thinking that we are “holding it together” when in fact we may be shutting everyone else out. I’ve been thru that cycle and now I try to keep moving forward with joy. I go farther on the good days than on the bad days and always HOPE for more good days. Figuring out the myriad…[Read more]

  • Shadowbox,

Your words speak of hope and renewal. Two key things that we as people living with pain need to have close by in our lives.
The journey of pain is a long & hard road to navigate. We sometimes lock ourselves away from the world around us because pain can be and is dark, lonely, frustrating and over-whelming. We search to find the light…[Read more]

  • Alexia,

Hello, it is nice to meet you but I do wish it was under better circumstances. We here at TPC are so very sorry that you have been shamed for living with pain.

The stigma that is out there is doing so much harm to people who live with pain. We are working to change the stigma so people living with pain are not shamed and are not put in…[Read more]
