Hi, Pipboy and Noki4, I love to play bubble witch and crush mania and jewel Mania. I can mindlessly play and distract myself on a day or evening I am having increased pain. I have a tablet or use my phone to access them so it does not take much effort and I do not need to sit in front of my computer. I am not skilled enough to play some of the games you mentioned. but the ones I do play keep me occupied for quite a while. I also like to play solitaire and other card games. again I sort of like the mindlessness of these games. I can zone out playing them and forget the pain for a time.
Other times I just get on the internet and spend time on facebook which connects me with positive thoughts (I avoid the negative talk and images) I have several sites that I go to for information or just a pick me up. I can keep connected to family members across the US.

Oh no Petmom…:( but did you have a good time? was it worth it? do not get discouraged. You can do one of 2 things…sit and analyze the weekend and what you might have done differently to stay on track and still have fun…or you could just chalk it up to a good time and start over today with a renewed sense of determination.

Petmom…I am with you on that. Water is one of the best vehicles for exercise, relaxation etc. Love the feeling of weightlessness. AND I think this is one of the many therapies we need to work on getting more available to people in pain. it is a relatively cheap therapy when you look at the cost of others that do not work as well.
Where would you start? the insurance companies? Health care facilities? Dept of health? -

That is so true. It took years to get here -to this point in time. It certainly did not happen overnight. Sometimes it seems that way when we actually “wake up” to the fact of our present circumstances. And as much as we would like to turn back the clock and weigh what we did 10 or 20 or 30 years ago; it it just is not going to happen overnight. That kind of thinking only leads to overwhelm and defeat. Taking a forward look at what we want and then setting realistic, attainable weekly and monthly goals will move us forward slowly but surely. Sometimes it also helps to make a list of what got us to this point in time…what excuses do/did we use to stay stuck in where we are and then what is our vision of our future self. Then find a way to destroy each excuse one by one. And replace each excuse with an intention of how to move forward to attain our goal.

Thanks Petmom, I try not to focus on the number…rather focus on how I feel and when others make comments Like -WOW you look like you are losing wt! I say thank you I feel better. And I only weigh in monthly at my clinic appts. (I do not own a scale) Funny I have been to the clinic more in the past 6 months that I have been in the past 6+ years.
Setting goals is so important…realistic attainable goals. something to strive for and a feeling of accomplishment when you do reach it. -

Yay – Petmom!! Don’t think the canine companion would fly at the pool. Here in Yakima – when the Pool closes for the season and before they drain the pool they have a canine fun in the pool day. anyone with a canine pet can bring them for a dip in the pool.
BTW I am down 4 lbs since Mid May. only 25 more to go!!

It is so sad that the treatments that work for most people in pain are not covered by insurances. but the big invasive and expensive treatments are covered whether the procedure is appropriate for the individual or not. I think this is an area that needs to be addressed locally, state wide and also nationally.

Great discussion! I love the name Painiac Shuffle, Move and More.
Petmom. I find that walking really intensifies the pain for me. So I choose Water walking as an alternative and I can do 1 hour of water walking and still feel like I can function the rest of the day. Of course year round access to a pool is necessary. My Medicare Advantage plan pays most of the cost..I do a copay of $13/month for access to the Athletic club pool and facility. I find it enjoyable and relaxing (the Hot tub helps afterwards as well) I also meet people there regularly, so it helps with socialization needs. Did you know that 30 minutes of water walking is equal to an hour of walking on land? the resistance of the water plus the low impact on joints makes it ideal for people with pain. -

Noki4, How are you doing with the smoking cessation journey?
I have never smoked but I really feel the struggle that others have when trying to quit smoking.
Beating yourself up is counter productive. Be extra gentle with yourself, Self compassion is so important to our survival and well being. I used to beat myself up for all sorts of things. I learned to stop doing this and now I have a little saying I have posted in various parts of the house. (on my computer screen, on the mirrors, on the inside of cupboard doors) each time I find myself saying something negative to myself about myself I say “I forgive myself for that thought; I chose love instead” It really works. Try it and see what it does for you. -

Stress Free to me means giving up my expectation that everything will be perfect. I set an intention to connect with family and enjoy their company. the rest is all icing on the cake. I do not stress over decorating. I do what I can, a bit at a time. some years this includes a wreath on the door and a few table decorations along with some candles around the house for added decoration. Some years I go all out with the decorations…depends on how I am doing at that time. This year I think it will be wreath on the door and table decorations.
I love gift bags too, Janice. they make wrapping a cinch and they are recyclable! -

Noki, I applaud you for choosing your friends over a cigarette. And happy to hear you continue to try to quit.

Petmom, I read your post and identified so much with what you were going through. I used to say oh its OK…I’m fine… But I clearly was not OK and would suffer through it knowing that I would get a headache afterwards and if we were eating and they lite up I would get stomach cramps. And I hated the smell. So after much thought and talking to a counselor I decided I needed to stop being so accommodating. I no longer will allow a smoking cigarette in my air space. I do not have any friends who smoke. and my family members who do smoke know they can not smoke around me. I respect them for respecting my need to be smoke free. My apartment and car are smoke free zones.
Nicotine has to be one of the worst addictions. (glad I never started – I hated the smell and was repulsed by the thought of inhaling it) I have a sister who will quit for months at a time and then go right back to it. One of these days she will be successful. I have decided that I can be supportive when she wants to talk about it. but harping on it does not work at all. But she does not smoke around me…except if we are outside and wind is blowing the smoke away from me.

Plateaus can be frustrating but they are a fact of life. With time and patience the weight loss will continue. Just keep doing what you have been doing to get to this point. AND know you are not alone…we are cheering you on.

one of our Physical therapy offices has a heated pool for aquatic exercise and water walking. After My recent pain episode I was referred to them and I really saw the benefit of the nice warm heated pool. the Athletic club is OK…not as warm because of the swim teams that use the facility…so they keep it cooler for them but after you get to the deeper end and start moving and do some warm up exercises it is OK.
One of our Hospitals put in a pool a few years back which was open to pain patients but then for no good reason the stopped and filled it in and opened another silly clinic for psychologists to work with pain patients. which shows just what they think about chronic pain. -

Helpful Tip of the Day:
Prepare your favorite Pasta. (shells, spirals, elbow macaroni etc) per package directions. DO NOT overcook.
Place serving size portions in Freezer Ziplock bags and place in freezer for later use.
When you want a quick meal do the following:
Remove pasta from freezer, thaw and heat in microwave 2-3 min
Cook pasta sauce – whatever brand you prefer.
Add sausage, ground beef or turkey, mushrooms etc to your preference.
Pour sauce over pasta and sprinkle with your favorite cheese.
make a side salad and you have a balanced meal in just minutes.Helpful Hint: (any sauce you do not use put in freezer container and freeze for later use)
