Sorry That I haven’t gotten back to anyone sooner. I have been off of pain meds for 1 1/2 years now, not by choice. Mine must have been one of the first VA’s to start this new policy. They also have switched to the mind over matter policy. The VA has tried several methods with me over the years to alleviate my chronic pain. Hypnotherapy, biofeedback, etc. None of them worked and I have a high tolerance to pain meds. I had been going outside the system to a spine specialist for pain meds, but was dropped from that place due to my missing a couple of appointments. I have had to learn to live with the pain because of my high tolerance and now lack of any sort of pain med. My spine is deteriorating due to bulging and herniated discs. I am currently going to physical therapy 1 x per week to ” strengthening my core ” Haven’t noticed improvements but will continue to make the 2-3 hour round trip and see if it will help. Not holding up much hope because I had something pop in my back 2 weeks ago that laid me out flat for a week. I am thinking one of the bulging discs herniated in my lumbar but won’t know til my next round of MRI’s. Will keep updating and let you know if I notice any improvements.

I have been recallecent in following the forums on the site. After I moderated chat today, I took a hint from something bd said in chat and clicked on the forums link.
I am definitely glad that I did. I learned a lot of pearls of wisdom from this thread alone. I will be writing a log book on how my body adapts to being taken off of morphine and to only having OTC meds to grapple with my pain. I Will try and keep an open mind to try some of the treatment of the New and Improved VA * snort * Whether it be biofeedback, meditation, holistic, ect. This won’t be easy for me because I am a skeptic. But I will give it a shot. My state has just passed a medical marijuana bill and I will write of my adventures of trying to get my id card for that. I now plan on using what bd suggested and map out my own pain numeric system. And I also plan on putting some of my meanderings on the Veterans board here. Hopefully, some of what I am going to be going through will help another veteran in need. May a few of you will find is helpful also. I salute bd on this postings here. They are always giving me new ideas and several of them have brightened my day.TPC_Opa

I guess none of this has been implemented as yet at the VA I use as of yet. Wish I was not so skeptical, but to me this is just another feel good, we are doing something for the vets like Veterans Choice. That has been one SNAFU after another and still no sign that they will get Veterans Choice running like they say it will. Reading this now is the first time I have ever heard of the DVCIPM. If I hadn’t read about this in your post FF, who knows when I would have heard of this. That is a systemic problem with the VA!!! 99.99% of the veterans have no idea what is available to them because the VA does not bother or want to educate the veterans as to what is available to them. The different parts of the VA itself do not understand what is what because of the lack of education that the staff receives as to how the programs should work. I found this out during my last go round with Veterans Choice. I knew more about VC than my va clinic did. It leads to a lot of confusion and ultimately frustration for the veterans in these programs when nothing gets done.

We got back from our excursion to Panama City Beach yesterday and had a wonderful afternoon with bd. He truly is living a dream and has a beautiful view to wake up to every morning. Meeting you was everything that I had hoped it would be and am looking forward to seeing you again the next time we sojourn your way. May just go by myself next time so can visit longer without worrying about the gk’s following in ms. kitty’s paw steps and tumble off the dock π Although, ms. kitty did not seem too impressed by our visit and hope she will allow me back on the Lonoh!

Have you thought about investing in a kindle or the like bd? The Gutenberg project and feedbooks are a couple of sites that you can download books that are out of copy write protection for free. Tons of classics, historical novels, etc. And you can store an unbelievable amount of books in one device that would take up no room on the Lonoh. I envy you your life my friend. Looking forward to meeting you this September. And will only take up a bit of your time so as not to wear you out π

I also find computer games to be a pleasant distraction from pain. I am into Neverwinter Online and Legendary Monsters via facebook. With Neverwinter a MMORPG ( Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Game ). In these games, you create a player charactor ( or toon ) and enter into a different world. Whether you enjoy fantasy or stepping into the future, there are games out there for everyone. Cya, Legendary Monters is calling me!

I have the same problem Noki. I am going to start going to a doctor outside the VA system because my PCP ignores me when I bring up the subject of headaches. I have these on a daily basis so I understand where you are coming from. Maybe one of us can find something that will help with this.

Great post sgt! Here is the link to the program and you can also download posters, brochures, etc. to put up around your town to help the homeless veterans.
There are approximately 130,000 to 200,000 homeless veterans every night according to the National Coalition for the Homeless: http://www.nationalhomeless.org/factsheets/veterans.html. The VA intends to end the homeless veteran problem by the end of the year. We shall see and hope for the best.

Noki,
Great find and so timely with the long wait times being experienced at VA facilities
across the country. Something indeed has to be done and hopefully soon for the nations veterans.TPC Opa

Jaimes,
Sorry to hear about all the problems you are having to deal with the VA. Unfortunately, I hear this all to often from fellow veterans. I served at Camp Lejeune from 1984-1987 so was on the tail end before they finally capped off the wells. In the last few months I have been going through a battery of tests after they noticed problems with my liver. Still no set prognosis but they are blaming Tylenol and alchohol. Have you registered with the VA that the VA has for Camp Lejeune vets?
Getting pain meds from any source is next to impossible now. Talking to my primary care about what I am supposed to do about my chronic pain and all she did was give me lidocaine patches and a topical ointment, neither of which do anything for the pain. I wish you the best for finding some relief from pain.Semper Fi,
